IAHR China and Malaysia Chapters Strengthen Ties at 2025 Singapore World Congress

On the afternoon of June 23, a side meeting was held between the IAHR China Chapter and Malaysia Chapter at the 41st IAHR World Congress, which was organized in Singapore during June 22-27, 2025, marking a renewed commitment to strengthening regional cooperation under the framework of IAHR.

Dr. PENG Jing, chair of the IAHR China Chapter and president of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), praised the contributions of both chapters as national branches actively supporting IAHR’s regional and global development. She highlighted the Malaysia Chapter’s long-standing efforts in organizing international academic conferences and scientific activities – including the 37th IAHR World Congress in 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – as well as the establishment of the Young Professionals Network (YPN) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia. These initiatives have played a key role in fostering the growth of early-career engineers in the region. She expressed her hope that the two chapters would actively pursue joint initiatives to support the sustainable development of IAHR. She emphasized the shared responsibility to contribute more significantly to global progress in hydro-environmental research, technological advancement, and international collaboration.

Dr. Fang Yenn Teo, chair of the Malaysia Chapter and professor of the University of Nottingham Malaysia, expressed his appreciation for the continued support and collaboration from the China Chapter. He acknowledged IWHR’s critical role in supporting both the IAHR Global Secretariat and the China Chapter Secretariat, underscoring its importance to IAHR’s long-term growth. Dr. Teo reaffirmed the Malaysia Chapter’s commitment to working closely with its Chinese counterparts to co-organize international water-related events, promote scholar exchanges, and jointly cultivate the next generation of hydro-environment professionals. Dr. Teo also mentioned the Malaysia Chapter has been very supportive of the IAHR activities in China, including the 35th IAHR World Congress in 2013 in Chengdu and the 24th IAHR-APD Congress in 2024 in Wuhan.

China Chapter Vice Chair CHEN Yongcan, Malaysia Chapter Past Chair Dr. Lim Chow Hock, IAHR Secretary General Emily Wang and other members from both chapters were also present.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing strong intent to enhance future cooperation and contribute jointly to IAHR’s mission of advancing water science and hydro-environmental engineering worldwide.
