The IAHR Label for Water Training and Education is awarded jointly by IAHR and UNESCO under the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program (IHP) to institutions promoting and implementing excellence in training and education programs for competent and skillful professionals in the water sector. This distinction highlights the commitment of IAHR and UNESCO-IHP to educational excellence, fostering innovative and sustainable solutions to address global water challenges.
IAHR is pleased to announce that it awards the IAHR Label for Water Training and Education to the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre (ABCD Centre) for the Joint Master’s Programme in “Water Security and Global Change (WSGC)”.
This unique programme, delivered jointly by RWTH Aachen University, IIT Madras, and TU Dresden, is recognized as the first Indo-German Joint Master’s Programme. It is designed to educate “future environmental leaders” by providing interdisciplinary expertise in hydraulic engineering, water resource management, and climate adaptation.
About the Joint Master’s Programme in “Water Security and Global Change (WSGC)”
The Joint Master’s Programme “Water Security and Global Change” commenced in late July 2024 and is known to be the first Indo-German Joint Master’s Programme. This unique structure of the programme positions it at the core of the very dynamic field of Indo-German cooperation in science and technology. Thereby, it not only attracts the interest of students from various countries and academic backgrounds, but also of governmental organizations, research institutions, development agencies, and industries. The overall aim of this interdisciplinary study programme is to educate “future environmental leaders” and to provide students with hands-on knowledge, methods, and practical experiences on a diverse range of water-related topics from water systems over water quality and pollution to water resource management.
Water Security is an increasingly important topic of our times and closely related to climate change, climate mitigation, and climate adaptation. Water as a resource influences many different aspects of human life, settlements, economies and societies as well as flora and fauna. Water security thereby includes, on the one hand, access to water and the absence or combatting of water scarcity as well as, on the other hand, the adaptation to severe climatic conditions and the protection from disasters caused by (too much) water like floods, tsunamis/cyclones/typhoons, or polluted water resources.
Addressing these aspects of water security is crucial for fostering sustainable development and resilience in the face of global challenges. The Joint Master’s Programme “Water Security and Global Change” uses hydraulic and civil engineering as a starting point to delve deep into the several aspects of water security and provides a unique opportunity to study at three very well reputed universities in India and Germany. Thereby, it enables students to take perspectives from global south and global north likewise.
