The Journal of Hydraulic Research (JHR) publishes research papers in theoretical, experimental and computational hydraulics and fluid mechanics, relating to rivers, lakes, estuaries, coasts, constructed waterways, and some internal flows such as pipe flows. To reflect current trends in water research, articles that explore outcomes of interdisciplinary hydro-environment studies with a strong fluid mechanical component are especially welcome. Although preference is given to fundamental issues, papers focusing on important unconventional or emerging applications of broad interest are also appreciated.

This issue opens with an open access state-of-the-art paper on free-surface behaviour of shallow turbulent flows. It provides information relevant to understanding the linkages between the free surface behaviour and underpinning hydrodynamic processes and analyses the gaps in knowledge in this critical topic. This is followed by a vision paper on the challenges posed by hydraulic structures of the 21st Century where issues related to air entrainment at hydraulic structures, transient turbulence during surge events in conveyance structures, and upstream fish passage at road crossings are reviewed. The authors argue that many technical solutions are not satisfactory and that the technical challenges in hydraulic structure design in the 21st Century are enormous and require engineering innovation, excellence in hydraulic research, and quality education in universities, complemented by indispensable interactions between engineers, scientists, and other stakeholders. The third article is a forum paper on turbulent length scales and budgets of Reynolds stress-transport for open channel flows in which the effects of the free surface on turbulence length scales and Reynolds stresses are studied in detail. The fourth article is a research paper that presents how the bed shear stress, initial and critical porosity, hydraulic conductivity, and density influence the detachment rate of dilatant soils that are subjected to high-velocity flows. The next article explores the important topic of flood-induced hydrodynamic loads on buildings. This is followed by a paper on the apparent cohesion effects on overtopping-induced fluvial dike breaching, where it is revealed that fine sand induces less frequent slope collapses but larger sliding/failing lumps compared to homogenous non-cohesive coarse sand. The seventh research paper is an experimental study that makes fundamental contributions to the understanding of hydrodynamics and secondary currents in an asymmetrical rectangular canal with streamwise beam. The eighth paper addresses the important yet not well-studied problem of localized roughness effects in non-uniform hydraulic waterways. This is followed by an article that develops a novel quantitative description of two-dimensional displacements of placed riprap stones subjected to overtopping flows; a paper that studies the effect of viscosity changes on the motion of debris flow where entrainment is considered; a paper on critical submergence for side circular intake in an open channel flow; and finally a paper on the gradient method for fuzzy analysis of water distribution networks. The issue concludes with two technical notes, one on the numerical investigation of air demand by the free surface tunnel flows and another on the Lattice Boltzmann method for shallow water flow with wave radiation stress. It ends with a discussion and closure.
