About
Dr. Christos V. Makris studied Civil Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and acquired his Diploma in 2005, specializing in Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering. He has held a master’s degree Diploma (MSc) in Coastal Water Resources, Engineering, and Management from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) since 2007. He received a Doctorate Diploma (PhD) in Computational Fluid Dynamics for Wave-induced Coastal Processes from AUTh in 2014. He is an Assistant Professor of Computational Fluid Mechanics for Hydraulic Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh) and works as a Research Associate at AUTh. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG/TEE), the Hellenic Hydrotechnical Association (HHA/EYE), the International Association of Hydraulic Research (IAHR), and the European Geosciences Union (EGU). He teaches the undergraduate courses a) Fluid Mechanics, b) Computational Fluid Mechanics, c) River Hydraulics and Engineering, and the post-graduate courses a) Numerical Methods in Fluid Mechanics, b) Computational Simulation of Marine and Coastal Environmental Processes in Catchment-Beach Systems in the PPS “Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering”, and d) Residual Flows and Coastal Flooding: Concepts of Hazard, Risk, Vulnerability, and Resilience in the PPS “Hydrometeorological Disaster Management”. He has taught the courses: a) Mathematical Modelling of Water Quality in Aquatic Ecosystems, b) Hydraulics for Groundwater Flows, and c) Numerical Models for Hydraulic Engineering as a University Fellow Scholar at AUTh. He also has 7 years of experience as a teaching assistant for the Coastal and Port Engineering and Coastal Engineering Projects courses. He has written four (4) scientific/academic theses at the graduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels. He has 127 publications (incl. peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, book chapters, academic textbooks, conference proceedings papers and abstracts, etc. He is an ad hoc reviewer for 48 journals and 3 conferences (102 reviews) and a guest/topic editor in 2 international scientific journals. He has also contributed to the formulation of 66 technical reports within the framework of research projects. His published research has garnered 1107 citations (680 heterocitations, 61.4%), with an h-index of 18, an i10-index of 27, an i1-index of 84, and a Research Interest score of 1184. He received a distinction (Thomaideio) prize for MSc students from NTUA in 2007, and a scholarship for postdoctoral research (IKY-SIEMENS excellence funding of the State Scholarships Foundation; SSF/IKY) in 2016-2017. His research interests and experience are focused on the following fields: port - coastal - ocean - maritime engineering, hydrodynamics, and modelling; physical and operational oceanography; computational fluid dynamics; turbulence models; numerical modelling; surf zone dynamics; SPH/LES; SWE models; wave models; design of coastal protection works; design of submarine diffusers and outfalls; storm surges and sea level variations; coastal flooding; littoral inundation; compound and flash floods; river engineering; sea level extremes; oceanographic forecast systems; climate change impacts on the marine environment; seawater quality monitoring; oceanographic field measurements; stakeholder engagement; coastal zone management; development of educational software. He has participated in 19 international and national research projects at NTUA, AUTh, and DUTh, including Accu-Waves (http://accuwaves.eu/), Wave4Us (http://wave4us.web.auth.gr/), MEDAQCLIM (http://medaqclim.po42.com/), CCSEAWAVS (http://www.thalis-ccseawavs.web.auth.gr/), TIMMOD (http://timmod.org/), and LocAll4Flood (https://locall4flood.interreg-euro-med.eu/), among others. Furthermore, he has participated in writing and submitting several research proposals for national and EU-funded programs. Moreover, he has experience organizing international workshops (DMPCO, Wave4Us, Accu-Waves, etc.).
