Abstract: Recently, extreme flood occurs frequently so that there have been serious damages in Korea. Accordingly, it is necessary to establish effective control plan against flood. Schemes for basin-wide flood control may be divided into structural and non-structural measures. There are various schemes in the structural measures such as diversion schemes, channel improvements and flood storage schemes. Of these structural approaches, diversion schemes may be considered with channel improvements in terms of their effects. Channel improvement schemes may be deemed to include the widening and deepening of existing channel, the embanking of the existing or improved river channels. All these works will not be a fundamental solution in view of habitat, amenity and increased maintenance costs. The flood storage reservoir, therefore, has much in its favor. The capacity of the reservoir both attenuates the incoming flood peak to a flow and delays the timing of the flood. In spite of the merits, the schemes should be applied with enough verification for results. In general, one dimensional numerical model is used to simulate the effect of flood storage reservoir in Korea. This study is focused on the verification of the numerical procedure for design of flood control reservoir. To do this, a simple stream network model with some flood control reservoirs are set up and both experimental and numerical modeling are carried out. The numerical results are compared with the experimental ones and main factors which are able to maximize the efficiency of attenuation in flood reservoir system are suggested.
