Abstract: Two case studies covering key aspects of the hazard assessments for some unique natural hazards in New Zealand are presented. The hazard posed by a potential failure of a natural dam blocking the outlet from the Mt Ruapehu Crater Lake is examined and the predictions compared with observations from the actual failure on 18 March 2007. The hazard caused by run-up on the upstream face of Aviemore Dam of seiche waves generated by seismotectonic displacement of the of Lake Aviemore is also described.
