Abstract: Evidence suggests that the Shotover River is increasingly obstructing the flow of the Kawarau River and consequently having a negative impact on the level of Lake Wakatipu under flood conditions. The Otago Regional Council has developed a management strategy for the delta based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, including physical scale modelling undertaken by Lincoln University. The strategy proposes the extraction of up to 900,000 cubic metres of sediment from the delta, contouring the delta to direct flood flows in the Shotover River to exit the delta at the bottom left corner, complemented by the construction of a training line to prevent a right side alignment. This work is also intended to reinstate some of the sediment buffering capability that the delta has progressively lost.
