Abstract: Interaction between waves and structures is of primary interest to coastal engineers. However, the structures have been considered to be of rigid in almost all of the available studies. In the present study, the wave transmission and wave reflection characteristics of the submerged elastic plates were studied in regular waves for a range of wave and structural parameters. In order to compare the results with that of rigid plate, a set of rigid plate experiments were also carried out. The depth of submergence of the horizontal plate was also varied so as to understand the influence of vicinity of the plates with free surface. In order to further understand the influence of elasticity of the structure on the wave-structure interaction, wave flume experiments were conducted using plates with varying levels of elasticity. The results indicate that the reflection coefficient of the horizontal plate increases with the increase in elasticity of the plate whereas the transmission coefficient decreases. Appreciable reduction in transmission coefficient is obtained for the most elastic plate with in the range of elasticity is studied. The elasticity in the plate has significantly improved the performance of the horizontal barrier in the lower B/L region where the rigid plate is not effective.
