Abstract: This paper presents the analysis of the problem of floating garbage and bad smell of the Hori River in Nagoya city, JAPAN. The character and the seasonal change of floating garbage were clarified by observation at the Hioki Bridge, and also the transport characteristics of floating garbage were investigated in upstream area from the Matsushige lock gate in the Hori River. From this research, the mechanism of the accumulation of floating garbage in the upstream area of the Hori River was shown. The bad smell in the Hori River usually occurred in downstream area from the Kameya Bridge and in the area between the Matsushige lock and the Naka Bridge, where the thickness of sludge and ignition loss was high value. Moreover, it was found that bad smell occurred strongly in the case of spring tide, summer and rainy day. From these results, the relationship between transport characteristics of floating garbage and sedimentation situation of sludge were discussed. Furthermore, effective countermeasure on bad smell was shown.
