Abstract:

Even though formal optimization techniques have been applied to several types of problems in the water industry, the vast majority of examples from the literature is based on (meta)heuristics, and in particular those inspired on nature. Their application has been shown quite successful and has allowed significant boosts in performance while reducing costs. This article provides an overview of nature-inspired opti- mization techniques, and briefly discusses a number of case studies in which they have been applied.
