Abstract: The soil air can be entrapped by water seeping through the dike and the dam. Air entrapment occurs in the upper segment of the dike below its crest and most commonly in the lower part of the dam core. The pressure of entrapped air is in general much higher than the pore water pressure. It can be a hazard for the earth structure stability.
