Abstract: Surges in open channels have been studied to evaluate the effect of gate closing time on the wave formation. Dependent on the duration of operation, different surge patterns can be observed, considerably influencing the resulting water elevation. Compared to theoretical calculations the performed measurements provide improved insight and allow the application of diagrams to assess relevant surge characteristics.
