Abstract: In order to purify water quality in a semi-enclosed bay, we have proposed the new method for activation of the tidal exchange by arrangement of artificial bottom roughness. In this research, a feasibility study was carried out by the numerical simulations of tidal current and diffusion of conservative matter in an actual semienclosed sea for a few cases with/without bottom roughness. The calculated results of the tidal residual current and the averaged residence time with bottom roughness were compared with the no-roughness case. As a result of this research, it becomes clear that the artificial bottom roughness can activate the tidal exchange significantly.
