Abstract: The sediment carrying flow is analysed through one dimensional equations using a two layer model. Criterion of stability of open channel flow and initiation of bed formation is obtained by using the stability conditions of development of nonstationary perturbations superimposed on the uniform flow. The effects of such flow parameters as density, depth of flow and material size on the threshold condition are shown. The results of analysis of the linearized equation, unlike the many predictions of viscous flow following from linearized theory, are in good agreement with experimental approaches.
