Abstract: Tidal prism of Lingdingyang Bay was calculated and analyzed in this paper with the methods of empirical formula and building two-dimensional mathematical model under body-fitted curvilinear coordinates respectively, and the effect of the Gangzhuao Bridge was investigated. The pure implicit scheme of hybrid finite analytic method was used to discrete and solute equations and the mathematical model was validated with measured data. It shows that tidal prism of Lingdingyang Bay calculated by empirical formula and measured data coincides almost with that by the mathematical model, with only less than 5% error. The results indicate that Lingdingyang mouth is the main path of tidal current with about 87. 7 per cent of total tidal prism and only 12. 3 per cent for Anshidun waterway. Totally, the tidal prism of Lingdingyang Bay was reduced due to the obstruction of the Gangzhuao Bridge. Numerical results showed an average 3. 12 per cent reduction of the total tidal prism compared with that without the bridge, and the reduction proportion increased with decreasing of tidal type. The effect of the bridge on tidal prism in the period of tide flood is larger than that in ebb. Tidal range in Lingdingyang Bay was reduced totally and low-low tidal level was uplifted more than decreasing of high-high tidal level.
