The Crump Weir Flow Field. Local Velocities – Shear Stresses – Static Pressures

Abstract: In this experimental study the local (point) horizontal velocities, boundary shear stresses and the static pressures along the water flow field upstream – over – and downstream a Crump weir within a horizontal rectangular open water channel, are presented, analyzed and discussed. The Crump weir is a hydraulic structure mainly used for discharge measurements in rectangular open channels, but it is also a very interesting hydrodynamic body within the water flow. The local (mean time) horizontal velocities are electronically measured on the nodes of a dense enough mesh, and the local boundary shear stresses are investigated as well. Finally, the static pressures along the vertical are investigated in order to water depths’ determination and comparison with direct (level gauge) depths’ measurements. The authors believe that the results of this work may help the hydraulic engineer to a better understanding of this interesting flow field.
