Abstract: The heavy metals in the dredged sludge from the water conservation projects have been paid more attention in terms of environment protection. The Xinbian river is located at the north of Anhui province, China. The total length of the river is 127. 1 km. The river was constructed for enhancing the capability of flood defense and water logging relief at north Huai river plain in 1970’s. After several decades, the river have been silt by the contaminated deposition from upstream and the industries along the river. The sludge would be dredged out in the proposed Xinbian river conservancy project. The temporarily occupied sludge-dumping yards are often used in dredging construction for water conservancy projects, which would be re-cultivated after completion of construction. However, The heavy metals content in dredged sludge were found occasionally exceed the Environmental quality standards for soils during the environmental impact assessment on water conservancy projects. It is not allowed to cultivate in cropland where the heavy metals content exceed the concentration limits according to the Environmental quality standards for soils. Thus, the special distribution of the heavy metals was investigated for quantitative analysis. The top 20 cm sludge along the 43. 2 km reach were finally indentified with heavy metal exceed the Environmental quality standards for soil. The total 0. 88 million m3 sludge with heavy metal were rational disposed in order to minimize the disadvantageous effects on the agriculture and environment.
