Abstract: We investigated effects of a fixed weir on benthic faunal communities. The investigated fixed weir is located in an upper reach of the Katsuura River (Tokushima Pref., Japan). We performed quantitative samplings for benthic animals and measured hydrologic parameters. As a result, the hydrologic parameters change, because of storage of water and only the sand of fine grains passing through the fixed weir. The habitats of benthic animals are influenced by changes of the grain size distribution. Especially, the habitats in the rapids are more affected than in the pools. The diversity of habitats is assumed to decrease.
