Sediment Control at Large Canal Diversions

Abstract: The problem of withdrawing sediment at canal diversions is old and still largely unsolved. In the west, it has been recently given the name “Bulle effect”, for the name of the Austrian researcher who made the first experiments on the subject in the west, (Schoklistsh, 1973) although apparently its results and some of the ways to solve them were known in China more than 2200 years ago, (Appleton, 1984). The author studied the problem in his doctoral thesis in 1974, (Ordonez, 1974). Recently, in Colombia, it required consideration in the design of a control system for the Canal del Dique, a major navigation channel in the Magdalena River, a large alluvial river, with an average discharge of 8000 m3/sec at the Canal intake, which derives 200 to 900 m3/sec during a typical year, reaching nearly 1, 200 m3/sec during large floods. The article reviews the “Bulle effect”, and some of the solutions that could be used in case of large diversions.
