Abstract: Water temperature in reservoirs is an important water quality factor which affects the living of aquatic, so the selective withdrawal intakes are adopted gradually. One kind of the facilities is the side type orifice intake, i. e., several orifice intakes were planted with different elevation, through the orifice, water converged at the water diversion channel. In this paper, based on the temperature data of a thermal stratified reservoir, the temperature stratification was simulated directly in a test model, and the relationship between the withdrawal rate and the temperature of water released were investigated. This studies showed that, with a fixed orifice and a certain temperature stratification, the temperature of water released will change with different withdrawal rate, and he amplitude of the variation is ultimately related to the temperature stratification. The results could guide the design of side type orifice intake in thermal stratified reservoirs.
