Abstract: A 2-dimensional numerical wave flume which is developed by directly solving Navier-Stokes equation for Newtonian fluids with SOLA-VOF technique is used to analyze the interactions between water waves and permeable breakwaters. The wave attenuation characteristics are investigated numerically for four different type permeable breakwaters, including L-shaped curtain walls, curtain walls, submerged and floating breakwaters. By examining the wave reflection rate on and wave transmission rate through the structures, we conducted comparisons on the wave protection effectiveness for the four different type permeable breakwaters. It is indicated that the calculated results by the numerical wave flume are reasonable, and the numerical wave flume is a prospective computer-aided design tool for maritime structure planning and design.
