Abstract: Dam-breach usually happens as a result of extreme floods, earthquakes, stability drawbacks, etc., which threatens human being downstream the dam and causes costly losses. In the flood management, the dam-breaching flow plays a great role in the dam-breaching process. The paper discusses the complex hydraulic characteristics of breaching flow and gives the simulation via the physical model and numerical model. The physical model is set up to analyze and verify the hydraulic factors of the breach. The 2-D and 3-D model are used to simulate the breaching flow over the dam. The distributions of velocity, Froude number are discussed for the breaching flow. The study results of the physical and numerical simulation provide the foundation for the breaching process and are of great value to the flood management referring to the dam-breach, including the flood propagation and river erosion induced by the breach.
