Characteristics of Amami Oshima Island Heavy Rainfall Disaster in October 2010

Abstract: A record-breaking rainfall amount of more than 130 mm for an hour was observed and continued for 2 hours at the rain gauge of the Sumiyo sub-office located in the southern part of Amami Oshima Island on October 20, 2010. This torrential rain caused disasters such as flood inundation, landslides and debris flows all over Amami Oshima Island. There were three casualties which were elderly people in this heavy rainfall. In Amami Oshima Island, heavy rainfall more than 100 mm/h occurred for three consecutive years. Residents living in the Sumiyo River basin suffer damage from flood for every year. In this study, the characteristics of heavy rainfall disaster in the Sumiyo River basin in Amami Oshima Island were described. Furthermore the behavior of the inundation flow in this area has been computed.
