Shelter Effect of Porous Wind Fences in an Open Storage Yard: Comparision Between Laboratory and Numerical Studies

Abstract: The shelter effect of porous wind fence around an open storage yard system in an harbour for bulk material like coal is investigated by laboratory studies and compared with the simulation results. Porosities of 10% and 20% were considered with different bottom gaps. Four gap ratios=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 were considered. The numerical analysis was done for different free stream velocities of 7.5, 10 and 12.5 m/s. The results obtained were compared with the results of wind tunnel testing and flow visualization. The flow visualization was done using saw dust, oil drops and smoke. The results obtained for the mean velocity and the reattachment length were compared with the experimental results. Comparison between the experimental and numerical results showed a fairly good agreement. Flow visualization technique provided sufficient information for planning and conducting flow field measurements with a clear demarcation of reattachment length. Comparing both the experimental and numerical investigation a porous fence with 20% porosity and a gap ratio of 0.1 is effective in providing good shelter effect.
