Estimating melt pond depth and ice thickness using melt-pond optical properties

Abstract: MELT POND IS A DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER OF THE SUMMER ARCTIC, AND AFFECTS ENERGY BALANCE IN THE ARCTIC SYSTEM. FOUR METHODS OF RETRIEVING POND DEPTH HP AND UNDERLYING ICE THICKNESS HI WERE SUMMARIZED. OBSERVED OPTICAL DATA OF MELT PONDS WERE USED TO COMPARE THE DIFFERENCE AMONG THESE METHODS AND DETERMINE THE OPTIMAL RETRIEVAL METHOD. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT MALIMKA18 AND ZHANG21 METHODS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR RETRIEVING HP UNDER OVERCAST SKY CONDITIONS. THE RETRIEVED HI FOR THIN ICE (HI < 1 M) ACCORDING TO LU18 METHOD AGREES BETTER WITH FIELD MEASUREMENTS THAN THICK ICE, BUT THOSE OF HP IS NOT GOOD. THE KÖNIG20 METHOD WILL UNDERESTIMATE HP. THESE FOUR METHODS CAN ENABLE THE ACCURACY OF RETRIEVING HI AND HP AND ALSO PROVIDE THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES (UAVS) IMAGES AND HYPERSPECTRAL REFLECTANCE IN THE ARCTIC SUMMER.
