Abstract: Water resources in Bulgaria during the 1982 -- 1994 drought period were estimated in quantitative aspects. The aim of this study was to analyze the possibility of this period to be a model for the future, taking into consideration the global climate changes. The basic element of this investigation is the quantitative aspect due to its strong natural relations to the climatic variations. The volume of the historical information for the quantitative investigation is much more abundant concerning river discharges, precipitation and air temperature. The analysis of multiannual variations of the river runoff and the elements of the water balance was executed. The idea was to obtain the general tendency and some possible changes in the future under different scenarios for global climate change. The definition of the 1982 -- 1994 drought period was made. The chronological structure of the drought was executed in relative units. The probable chronological characteristics of the period along with estimates of theoretical approximation of empirical distribution curves are discussed. In the study some basic results are discussed and recommendations are made.
