Abstract: One-way flow has large effect on water exchange between contaminated bay water and fresh ocean water. Kagoshima Bay in Japan is the almost enclosed bay, and the water exchange is very small. In order to enhance the water exchange, the plan of the excavation of new-channel is proposed. In this paper, the author carried out the hydraulic model experiments in order to know the effect of the excavation of new-channel on water exchange of contaminated bay water. It is concluded that the one-way flow in the channel generated by a gate operation has large effect on water exchange, but the oscillating flow without gate operation does not have any effect on water exchange. And the exchange ratio of one-way flow is considered as 100% of the amount of water volume discharged into a bay pass through the new-channel. Furthermore the author calculated the amount of water volume pass through the new-channel by the Runge-Kutter-Gill method under the conditions of tidal elevation data at the both ends of the channel. The computed result agrees well the result of the hydraulic model experiment. Then he presented the estimation method of water exchange rate by using field observation data of tide, but without doing any hydraulic model experiments.
