Abstract: The paper reports on results of three dimensional velocity measurements in a flume with natural, flexible water plants focusing on quantification of flow resistance. Three different plant types were chosen with respect to different plant structure and stem length. Hydraulic resistance for varying relative submergence will be described by means of equivalent sand roughness following the quantification of hydraulic resistance of rough channel beds. The results illustrate that the equivalent sand roughness as well as the zero plane displacement of the logarithmic velocity profile correspond to the effective plant height.
