Abstract: In mid to late August, Tropical Storm Fay released record breaking rainfall amounts over a two week period which produced torrential rainfall resulting in extensive flooding across Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba. After crossing the Florida Straits, Fay caused flooding of historic magnitude throughout much of the Southeastern United States. Most severely impacted were the States of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Tropical Storm Fay made landfall in Florida four separate times, breaking the record of any storm that has hit the United States. Several locations received high rainfall amounts, some exceeding 25 inches. This unusual amount of rainfall affected agriculture, transportation, water-control structures as well as numerous homes, businesses, and public facilities. Damages from the flood are estimated to exceed $1 billion.
