Abstract: Optimal operation rules of the Grijalva river dam system in Mexico has been part of different studies made during the last 15 years. Stochastic dynamic programming optimization technique had been very useful to translate the common language of the operators to an objective function and the setting of the restrictions of this complex problem. In the year 2006, new operating rules were generated which consider the hydrological extreme events that took place in the year 2005. This paper deals with the optimal operating rules that can be used in biweekly periods. Guide curves previously established for the level of the water in the dams were included in the optimization algorithm to get the new operating rule and the periods when this curve could be equaled or exceeded during the simulation were identified. In order to compare results the new and the previous policies were simulated with both historical and ten synthetic records of one hundred years each one.
