Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the results of the physical model tests carried out to analyse the performance of some innovative low-reflection vertical typologies for open-cell breakwaters and wharves. The studies were developed in two steps: a “hydrodynamic study” and a “forces study”. In the “hydrodynamic study”, open-and closed-cell arrangements and different water levels were considered. Reflection coefficient (Cr) was measured and the hydraulic behaviour (energy dissipation mechanism and overtopping) were analysed. The “forces study”, consisted of evaluating the wave stresses in the front wall and in the cells. The options were proposed by the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (PAAB) for the port enlargement and by the company FCC Construccion, S. A. (FCC) in an R&D&I context. The tests were conducted in the CEDEX Great Flume, to scales of 1/8; 1/12.5 and 1/18, the results being: -Hydrodynamic study. Best performance. Breakwaters: Tp = 7-9 s; C r = 0.33-0.7. Wharves; Tp = 5-9 s; C r = 0.27-0.8-Forces study o Breakwaters: proportional to wave height and practically independent of period o Wharves: slight increase in horizontal forces when compared to vertical caissons
