Abstract: This paper presents the results from a navigation study undertaken to support planning and forecast models for sustainable shipment operations on the Rio Paraguay in South America. The principal objectives of this study were to evaluate the risk of low draft conditions on the lower 1400 km of the river, quantify limiting navigations depths, and assess potential low flow scour of river crossings. The low flow navigation conditions were quantified using a combination of field survey and monitoring, hydrologic and geomorphic characterization, and hydrodynamic and sediment transport modeling. These techniques were combined to quantify the expected distribution of low flow draft depths for a range of hydrologic conditions throughout the river system.
