Abstract: Due to the rapid development of RCC (Roller Compacted Concrete) dam construction, stepped spillways become more and more popular. To a large extent present design approaches refer to steep slopes (▲). Furthermore, most of available formulas for description of embankment stepped spillway hydraulics are focused on uniform flow region. Less information is available for moderate inclinations of embankment dams (1V: 2H to 1V: 3H) and for the developing nonuniform flow region. Here, the self-aerated flow properties are measured with a double-tip conductivity probe on a physical model scaled 1:10 in skimming flow regime. By varying the slope, the step height and the discharge a large range of boundary conditions is taken into account. Major parameters as the flow depths and flow velocities are described as functions of the drop height. Hence, this paper is a guidance for the design of embankment stepped spillways of arbitrary heights.
