Surficial Sediment Size Distribution Through the Use of Digital Imaging and Autocorrelation Analysis

Abstract: Information on grain size distribution has many applications in the field of fluvial engineering, such as sediment transport and deposition, and fluvial habitat modeling. This study aims at finding a sampling and analysis technique that achieves a satisfactory characterization of grain size while simultaneously reducing the time spent in both the field and the laboratory. During this study a new method of size distribution of river bed materials through digital imaging and autocorrelation analysis has been used. 75 % of the samples analyzed show strong correlation to the sieve analysis results. Overall average error of around 10 % is observed. Moreover, the method proves to be cheaper and faster than the traditional methods by more than 100 %.
