Abstract: A number of run-of-river hydroelectric projects are being designed and constructed in British Columbia, Canada. The projects are considered a significant contributor to green power because they produce energy from the naturally flowing water and do not involve large dams, reservoirs, or flooding. Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) has conducted a number of physical and numerical hydraulic model studies to evaluate intake designs for run-of-river hydroelectric projects. This paper provides recommendations regarding general intake arrangement; optimal velocity distributions through critical sections of the intake to improve flow patterns and decrease sediment entering the penstock; and vortex suppression devices.
