Abstract: Hydraulic characteristics of pumped storage intakes in both the upper reservoir and the lower reservoir are important to get high efficiency in converting the hydropower into the electric power and vice versa. At present, the relationship between the geometrical factors and hydraulic characteristics are not perfect for pumped storage intakes, and model experiment research are used to verify and optimize them. In this paper, the impacts of geometrical factors on flow characteristics –vortices, head losses, velocity distribution and circulation flow have been analyzed and discussed by summarizing data of the physical model experiment research. It provides basis for design of side intakes.
