Abstract: Plunge pool is one of energy dissipation structures for high head dams which ensures stability of the dam under extreme hydrodynamic pressures due to the falling jet impacts. The excess energy of the jet is dissipated together with significant dynamic pressures exerted on the floor and pool walls. In this research, the dynamic pressures on the floor are assessed by using a generalized code which is based on the finite volume method. The complex turbulent flow fields in a plunge pool are simulated by using the k-ε turbulence model. The pressure distribution on the plunge pool bottom for different jet and pool dimensions is calculated and compared with experimental results, which shows a good agreement.
