Abstract: This paper presents preliminary results of an experimental study on 3-dimensional scour at submarine pipelines in uniform sediments under a steady unidirectional current. The temporal development of the free span length of the 3-dimensional pipeline-scour hole under different sets of environmental conditions is recorded and the corresponding propagation velocities are calculated. The experimental results are grouped into different parameters identified by means of a dimensional analysis to investigate the propagation velocity of the free span length. Moreover, the scour pattern under different combinations of environmental conditions is discussed to obtain an improved understanding on the mechanisms of scour hole propagation at the span shoulder.
