Abstract: This paper gives a brief review on the development of data-driven modeling systems and their applications in coastal water environmental prediction. It points out that the lack of this kind of integrated application system limits the abilities to handle most complex coastal processes and instrumental observations together to accurately predict real-time impacts of storms/hurricanes, surges, tides, river floods, geomorphologic changes in coasts and estuaries. It emphasizes that solving largescale coastal/estuarine water environmental problems need to develop a data-driven prediction system by integrating computational models, observation infrastructure, and network-based information technology.
