Abstract: Some authors have described flow patterns in vertical slot fishways, while others have studied fish swimming capabilities, but these pieces of information have not be linked to get a design tool, easy to use for engineers and designers. This paper presents a first and simple attempt to develop such a tool, sponsored by CEDEX and the Ministry of the Environment (Spain), to be used mainly in Spanish rivers, but which is useful anyway, as fish ability patterns have been obtained not only from iberian fish but also for other species. While this simple model is to be improved, its use can be adequate from now on to simple vertical slot fishways, both for salmonid and cyprinid fish.
