Abstract: Hydropower with very low head differences – defined here as 2.5m and below – is a mostly untapped resource. Estimates of potential power range from 500 MW in Germany, to 800 to 1000 MW in the UK. Conventional turbines are – due to the very large diameters and the large civil engineering works – considered not cost-effective for this application, and may cause ecological concerns, mostly due to their impact on fish. A European Research Project with 11 partners from five countries is currently developing novel hydropower converters to make this resource available in a costeffective and ecologically acceptable way.
