Abstract: Recently introduced riverine hydraulic measurement techniques combined with outcomes of global positioning and remote-sensing technologies provide georeferenced information on river dynamics that previously would have been impossible. In this study, we developed the electronic float by attaching an integrated module composed of GPS and radio-frequency wireless communication chipset to the top of the conventional rod float used for simply making flood discharge measurement. The electronic float flows along the river, receiving information on its absolute position and transmitting it to the field hydrographer. With use of three different channels, position information on fifteen rover floats can be simultaneously acquired with one base station. After calibration and spatial interpolation and averaging, position information on each electronic float is used for calculating plane2D velocity and additionally, discharge with cross-section area. Furthermore, when it is provided with web-based global satellite imagery like GoogleEarthT M, hydrogeographic information is easily serviced to common people as well as experts in water resources. Since the electronic float is unmanned instrument, safe measurement can be made even at nighttime and hazardous condition such as flood and nasty weather. It is also expected to be widely utilized for flow measurement at reservoirs, water intakes, spillway approaches, coast, et. al.
