Evaluation of Fish Physical Habitat Effect by Artificial Change of Streambed Topography

Abstract: Currently, there is an increase in the social interest about the river ecological habitat. River ecosystem exists in high position focusing on fish habitat evaluation. The objective of this study is to estimate fish physical habitat change by artificial variation of streambed topography applying two-dimensional physical habitat simulation model, River2D. The study area is Je stream in a reach length of 130m, within Geum river basin in Korea, which is 400m upstream of the confluence. The target fish is the dominant fish species, Zacco Platypus. Result indicated that for natural condition, the annual mean outflow of 0.64m3/s is much lower than the evaluated optimum flow from 1m3/s to 3m3/s for both adult and spawning growth step. In addition, the artificial variation of streambed topography of the five scenarios to evaluate fish physical habitat, applied the observed discharge (0.31,0. 87,3. 29m3/s). As a result, scenario 1~3 (Small Dam) conditions' increase in fish physical habitat but scenario 4~5 (Pool) conditions' decrease in fish physical habitat. Finally, scenario 2 condition gave the best fish physical habitat.
