Abstract: During breaking, waves are complex mixtures of air and water and air cushioning strongly affects the wave loading on structures, therefore, even if single phase numerical codes are often used, processes in the breaker zone should be better regarded as multiphase ones. The aim of this paper is to describe a two-phase numerical model called COBRAS2 and to investigate effects of the inclusion of air in numerical simulations concerning coastal issues. Comparisons between experimental data and computational results are performed in order to prove model stability and accuracy. Processes occurring at wave breaking and at wave impact on a vertical wall are moreover numerically investigated.
