Fundamental Investigation of Water Flow in Harbors Through a Flushing Culvert

Abstract: Water circulation and stagnation problems exist in many contemporary harbors and marinas raising significant health issues and severely decreasing the amenity value of a coastal area. As a countermeasure flushing culverts are in use for many years now, but their design for the coastal environment is mainly based on engineering experience and intuition. Recent studies encourage their use but they mainly focus on systems placed at mean water level (MWL). Phsical model experiments and a theoretical model presented here, point out a strong correlation between the culvert length and the incoming wavelength. The oscillatory motion developing inside the tube was visualized and flow measurements with ADVs indicate that considerable transmission coefficient values do not necessarily imply significant flow rates towards the protected area.
