Towards Reliable Modeling of TDG in Power Dams

Abstract: This paper presents results of a long-term research effort to predict the hydrodynamics and Total Dissolved Gas (TDG) in hydropower tailraces. The objective of this article is to show the capability of a two phase anisotropic model to correctly simulate the processes leading to high TDG. Model predictions are compared against field data collected in the tailraces of McNary, Wanapum, and Wells dams. Bubble size and gas volume fraction at the spillbays are inputs of the model. Direct measurement of these two-phase flow quantities in a prototype spillway is extremely difficult. Progress on measurement capability of these quantities downstream of a model-scale spillway-type fish bypass and in full scale using optical probes are presented.
