Abstract: The ecologically and economically important mangrove forest “the Sundarban” located in the south-western part of Bangladesh faces potential threat due to oil spill accidents. The damage due to such accidents in the said areas could not be assessed in the past because of absence of a predictive tool and knowledge associated with oil spill accidents. This paper aimed at the development of a two-dimensional oil spill model to assist the preparation of a national oil spill contingency plan to mitigate the impact of oil spills that may occur at any time in the navigational and sea port areas of Bangladesh for immediate response and clean-up operations.
