Abstract: There has been severe flood damage four times at the downstream end of the Natori River, Japan in the past fifteen years. In order to reduce the damage in this area, an embankment was constructed in 2001 at the mouth of the Natori River, to separate a tributary from the main river channel. Immediately after the completion of the embankment construction, considerable sediment deposit has occurred at the throat section bounded by the jetties. In the present study, influence of the embankment construction on the river mouth topography is investigated using transverse cross-section data at the river mouth. Furthermore, the mechanism of river mouth topography change is quantitatively explained in terms of the reduced area of tidal compartment.
