Abstract: Accurate estimation of wave heights and periods in harbor is of great importance to design harbor facilities. Wave overtopping rate becomes one of the most important factors to determine the dimension and type of sea walls and coastal dikes. The accurate estimation of wave overtopping rate at sea wall line should be established for design of safe harbor area. The paper proposes a new system for real-time wave overtopping monitoring in a harbor applying wave data observed in an offshore wave observation station. In the system, the wave profile at sea wall line is derived from the computation of non-linear wave transformation in shallow water. A wave overflow model is employed to obtain the overtopped water volume from the wave profile at sea wall. The estimated wave overtopping rate is compared with the measured data in a typhoon attack. The good agreement between the measured and estimated wave overtopping rate demonstrates the applicability of the system to practical warning and design tool.
