Abstract: The city of Thessaloniki is located in the centre of Macedonia facing the Thermaikos Gulf. The enclosed outline of the gulf makes it a very sensitive area, especially on its southern part where major tourist and shellfish production facilities are located. Thessaloniki is the second city of Greece, with a population of around 1 million and a diversity of industrial, commercial and tourist activities which have urged the Ministry of Environment to upgrade and optimise the operation of the sewerage and wastewater treatment facilities.
